PORTLAND (WGME) -- More than 70 percent of Mainers will soon get access to faster internet speeds through Fidium's broadband expansion.
Fidium, an internet service provider owned by Consolidated Communications, says this expansion will reach more than 400,000 homes and businesses.
According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, broadband internet access can reduce poverty, improve health and enhance economic opportunities.
The company says the new connections will allow Mainers to engage in the digital economy and offer a better streaming experience.
"It allows them to get all the video services that they want over the top," Fidium Vice President of Market Development Sarah Davis said. "It allows for them to apply for jobs and just participate in the digital economy in so many ways and allows them not to go to work and work where they live."
Fidium hopes to expand broadband access to thousands of Mainers by the end of the year.
The state had set a goal of connecting any Mainer that wanted broadband by the end of 2024.
As of last summer, the CBS13 I-Team found 4 percent of Maine lacked high-speed internet, while 1 percent had no access to an internet connection at all.
