WELLS, Maine — Internet provider Fidium is expanding its fiber broadband network in York County, bringing next-generation connectivity to thousands of homes and businesses.

Construction is set to begin June 15 to bring symmetrical multi-gig speed access to Wells, Ogunquit and Kennebunk, and expand availability in York.

The expansion will triple fiber availability in York County, with the goal of reaching more than 37,000 homes and businesses by the end of the year.

“Expanding Fidium in York County delivers turbocharged speeds and the latest, most reliable broadband technology,” said Sarah Davis, vice president of market development for Fidium. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we build this new fiber infrastructure, which will connect residents and businesses to opportunities not previously accessible.”

More than 700,000 combined homes and businesses in Maine and New Hampshire have access to Fidium. This includes York in Maine, where initial fiber expansion was completed in 2024, as well as Hampton, Portsmouth, Rye and Seabrook in New Hampshire. Fiber access is coming soon to Old Orchard Beach, where Fidium began construction earlier this year, as well as other locations across the region.

Fiber construction involves installing new fiber optic lines along roads and within public utility areas, which may require trenching, digging, or climbing utility poles. Crews will operate along the edges of private property within public rights-of-way and designated utility easements. During construction, residents may experience temporary traffic detours, noise, and dust. Work zones will be clearly marked with paint and flags, which will be removed once the project is complete.

Davis said mailers, door hangers, and construction alerts will be distributed to keep the public informed. Fidium representatives will visit neighborhoods to share more about what to expect during construction and how to sign up to be notified as soon as the service is ready to install.
