FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine (WAGM) - Construction has started this week on the expansion of a fiber network in Fort Fairfield.
2,200 Residents in Fort Fairfield will have the option to get connected to the new internet source. We spoke with Town manager Tim Goff about what this means for the Fort Fairfield Community
"We had some Fiber in the downtown and other places, but this rollout will expand that footprint to the underserved areas in the community. Give them the capacity to be able to work from home. For our elderly, give them the capacity to access telehealth and ultimately having more competitors in the marketplace will hopefully drive the price down, if not at least hold the prices the same so it's a win for our community and it's just great to see that investment," says Goff.
"We'll place our Fiber over our existing strand mostly on poles in the Fort Fairfield area. Construction will move very quickly. You'll see crews in and out. They be latching that fiber and leaving coils behind, and then we will come back and slice it in and do all the side leads down the side streets," says Sarah Davis, Vice President of Market Development for Consolidated Communication.
Davis says they expect the internet to be accessible this summer for folks in the area who wish to have the service.
More information on the fiber build progress will be shared with residents and city officials through the mail, door hangers, and construction alerts. Fidium representatives will also be visiting neighborhoods to share more about what to expect during construction. Folks can sign up for the multi-gig speed internet with the link below.
