To the editor:
My name is Reuben Mahar. I’m an IT professional based in Waldoboro, the former chair of the Waldoboro Communications and Technology Committee, and a current member of the town’s economic development committee. Over the past few years, working together with broadband committees, town managers, county commissioners, and community leaders across Lincoln County, we’ve been able to secure funding and support for a major expansion of fiber-optic broadband.
It’s a big deal — and it’s a big step forward for our communities.
For years, many towns across Lincoln County have been known for their strong public safety, thriving local businesses, and communities that take care of their own. When it comes to internet access, however, much of our region has been stuck in the past. But that’s all changing – the lights have come to Lincoln County.
Consolidated Communications’ Fidium fiber-optic broadband is rolling out across our towns, lighting the way to the future. For the first time, many residents and businesses will enjoy the latest technology, gaining access to the best connectivity available. Fiber-optic broadband isn’t just fast — it’s built to last, ready to handle the advancements and technologies of the future.
Fiber’s advantages go far beyond quick downloads. With faster upload speeds and improved latency, remote workers can collaborate more efficiently, and cloud backups and video calls will be smoother.
These benefits aren’t just abstract. For people like me who work remotely, reliable connectivity is crucial to staying productive and making a living.
With new fiber access arriving, I’m particularly looking forward to improved reliability and affordability. Thanks to support from the Maine Connectivity Authority, Lincoln County government, and our town leaders, this project has become a reality. Fidium’s arrival sparks competition, which benefits us all. Even after promotional rates, their plans remain competitive, driving better prices and service across the board.
This new connectivity will enhance daily life in countless ways. Fiber allows businesses to operate more reliably, creating opportunities for growth and attracting entrepreneurs and remote workers. Additionally, homes with fiber internet often see higher real estate values, making Lincoln County even more appealing to buyers and sellers.
At home, this means new access to telehealth services and online education, as well as more ways to stay in touch with loved ones. And there’s no need to worry about losing traditional TV access — services like FuboTV ensure live TV remains available, with better picture and sound quality — perfect for movie buffs and sports fans (Go Bruins!).
Across Lincoln County, local libraries are stepping up, offering classes to help everyone make the most of this new technology. Whether it’s learning job skills, using telehealth, or staying connected with family, support is available to help everyone thrive with this new connectivity.
With fiber lighting the way, Lincoln County isn’t just keeping up — we’re moving forward, and our communities are ready for the future. Let’s seize this chance to support local businesses, enhance education, improve access to essential services, and ensure that Lincoln County continues to thrive in the digital age.
