Two cities, one ribbon: Saco and Biddeford are Gig Towns
Biddeford and Saco do a lot together. This year that has included a shared awards contest and, as of this week, a shared ribbon cutting. Fidium is part of both.
The ribbon cutting
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Biddeford and Saco were recognized as Fidium Gig Towns, acknowledging widespread access to Fidium’s high-speed fiber internet network. Saco Bay News reported that the designation was presented at a ribbon cutting outside Saco City Hall, with elected officials, Chamber members, Saco city staff and Fidium representatives attending.
What fiber means for the two cities
“Fiber unlocks a plethora of opportunities,” said Sarah Davis, vice president of Market Development for Fidium. She pointed to people who work from home, older residents who use telehealth services while aging in place, and students taking classes through distance learning.
Tracy Desjardins, Saco’s economic development director, noted that reliable, fast internet is one of the things a business weighs when choosing a new community. Saco Mayor Jodi MacPhail added that Fidium offers several monthly plan options to fit different needs and budgets.
The trophy part
In June, the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram held the inaugural Best of Biddeford+Saco contest. Only businesses in Biddeford and Saco were eligible, and winners were revealed at an awards night on June 23 at the University of New England’s Biddeford campus. According to the City of Saco, more than 9,700 votes were cast across 70+ categories. Fidium was named Best Internet Provider.
Thanks to everyone who voted.
