Skowhegan celebrates Gig Town status at ribbon cutting on May 23

SKOWHEGAN, Maine — May 24, 2024 — Local officials, business leaders and community members celebrated Skowhegan's new status as a Gig Town at a ribbon cutting on May 23. With more than 7,000 homes and businesses in the Skowhegan area now able to access multi-gig internet speeds from Fidium Fiber, the community can benefit from the economic, educational, employment and entertainment benefits that accompany better internet access.

The celebration included remarks by Christian Savage, Executive Director at Somerset Economic Development Corporation, Sarah Davis, Vice President of Market Development for Consolidated Communications.

Fiber construction completed in recent months, and the town is ready to celebrate new opportunities. The fiber network was built by Consolidated Communications in partnership the town and partial funding through the Maine Connectivity Authority's Connect the Ready program. Research shows that better internet increases home values, drives business innovations, allows growing businesses to stay in the community, and expands employment opportunities for the growing remote workforce.
