How can we help?

Optimizing your WiFi connection

Get the most from your Fidium WiFi network with a few simple steps

Fidium is here to provide tips, guidance and information about your WiFi setup. Learn about equipment installation and placement, as well as testing your system to make sure it's operating at peak efficiency.

Placing your WiFi gateway

Picking the right spot for your WiFi gateway (also known as a modem-router combination) is key. During installation, the Fidium Network Expert will help you choose the best spot for your gateway.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when thinking about placement:

  • Find a spot for the gateway near an electrical outlet
  • Place it near the center of your building (equally distant from the external front, back and side walls)
  • If your home or business has more than two levels, put the gateway on a middle floor
  • In the room you have chosen, place the gateway on a shelf about halfway between the floor and ceiling; do not place it on the floor
  • Place the gateway in an open space, not in a cabinet or media console; never cover your router
  • Choose a location away from electronics (such as microwave ovens or cordless phones) and large metal objects
  • Building materials such as concrete, brick, stone and metal can affect the range

This may sound complicated, but your Network Expert will assist you in finding the right spot for your gateway to provide optimal WiFi performance.

WiFi extenders

Fidium offers WiFi extenders to increase the strength and range of your home WiFi network.

During installation, the Network Expert will determine which rooms are most in need of a signal boost to ensure the best network coverage.

If needed, the Network Expert will place and install one extender that’s plugged into an Ethernet port. Additional extenders don’t need the Ethernet connection; they can be plugged into a normal electrical outlet.

Your Fidium WiFi extenders should always remain inside, since they’re not designed to survive outdoor conditions. But don’t worry—you can get wireless coverage for your patio, deck or yard! Just attach an extender to an outlet on a wall near your outdoor location and you should be able to enjoy your connected devices outdoors.

Here are a few tips if you are placing extenders after your original installation:

  • Use the Attune app to identify places that need a signal boost
  • Locate the extenders 30’-40’ away from each other and the gateway
  • Avoid placing the extenders near large appliances, glass, mirrors, or concrete, as these may affect network strength

Maximizing your connection speeds

We are committed to helping you achieve the fastest possible WiFi so you can relax and work without worrying about slow downloads, wonky streaming or laggy video calls. The Fidium Attune™ WiFi app or the Fidium Attune@Work™ WiFi app can be used to pinpoint the maximum speed of every device on your network.

Our Fidium Network Expert will conduct an initial speed test for your network during installation. After installation is complete, you can use the Attune app at any time to perform a test.

Running speed tests can help identify any devices or issues that may be causing the network to slow down. Here are a few general tips to help you achieve the fastest speeds on your home network:

  • Use the Attune app to identify issues with your internet connection
  • Shut down all wireless devices (such as tablets, computers, smart TVs, gaming systems and phones) other than the device you are running a test on. Limiting the network to one device when you run the test will help isolate and identify what might be slowing down your network

You can view your speed test history in the app at any time to see if the speed of your internet connection has changed since installation. This information may be useful if you are trying to decide whether to upgrade or downgrade your service.

We also monitor your speed and history to proactively alert you when changes might help you achieve the best possible connection.
